NATURAL HAIR QUESTIONS

1. HOW DO I SPEED UP MY HAIR GROWTH?:
Simple answer, you can’t. The speed at which hair grows is determined by genetics. There’s nothing you can add that will increase that speed. BUT there are optimum conditions that can grow your hair as genetically fast as possible for you. This includes keeping the scalp clean and free of dirt and dandruff, and avoiding styles that pull on the roots. Another important thing to note is that you want to retain length. Retaining length means that you retain the length of hair that has grown, and reduce breakage. To do this, keep hair moisturized, detangle properly, and be gentle with the hair.

2. HOW DO I TREAT DANDRUFF?
First and foremost, there’s no way to permanently stop dandruff. There is no shampoo, cream, or treatment that you can use once that will get rid of dandruff forever. The most common cause of dandruff is dirt, dead skin, and build up, and the easiest way to treat this is keep the scalp clean. Wash regularly (generally once a week or every other week for those who get dandruff easily) making sure to massage the scalp for 3-5 minutes with shampoo, then rinse shampoo clean (make sure to follow up with conditioner ON THE HAIR ONLY). Avoid applying any oils or butters to scalp, and instead opt for water based remedies like aloe vera juice, tea, and glycerin/water mix.

3. HOW DO I CARE FOR MY HAIR?
Well, this is a super general question, so let’s just start with the basics of hair care. You’re going to need a shampoo (or other cleansing agent), deep conditioner, a moisturizer/leave in conditioner, and some oil. That’s about it. You’ll want to shampoo regularly (meaning off enough to keep the scalp relatively clean), and when you do follow up with a deep conditioner. With conditioner in the hair, gently detangle with your fingers or a wide tooth comb, two strand twist the hair, and rinse fully. Then apply your leave in conditioner, followed by oil (we call this moisturizing and sealing), then twist or braid hair. Every night, moisturize and seal to keep hair moisturized. Repeat the wash process again when the scalp/hair is dirty. And this is pretty much how you care for hair at the most basic level. If you’re still confused, it helps to watch YouTube videos showing the entire process.

4. MY HAIR CUTS AND BREAKS, HOW DO I STOP IT?
Breakage is caused by generally two things: dry hair or poor hair care handling. Dry hair means, well, your hair is dry. To combat this, make sure you moisturize and seal (see above) daily, and deep condition every wash day with a moisturizing deep conditioner. Breakage is also due to poor hair care handling. Many times this is caused by poorly detangling. To detangle properly, spray hair with some water or apply conditioner to hair, section, and then detangle using a wide tooth comb or your fingers, then two strand twist to keep hair detangled. It helps to keep hair stretched too. You do not need heat to stretch your hair. Braiding, twisting, bunning, or threading are none heat ways to keep hair stretched. Lastly, consider using a satin bonnet, pillowcase, or scarf when you sleep at night. Cotton materials wick moisture from hair, which can cause dryness.

5. HOW DO I MOISTURIZE WHILE IN A PROTECTIVE STYLE?
For braids and twists, every day, spray hair with a mix of water or oil, or if your hair gets really dry, add a leave in conditioner to that. If you’re wearing extensions, make sure hair has time to dry before moisturizing and sealing again, or it will begin to mildew. For styles such as crohect braids or some types of weave, lift up the extension hair, and spray hair with a mix of water and oil. Make sure the hair dries before you moisturize and seal again. There are some protectives styles, such as weaves where the hair is fully covered, that will make moisturizing and sealing difficult. Try not to do these types of hairstyles and instead opt for other ones. If you find that your hair still is dry, consider short term protective styles that can be redone weekly where you have easier access to your hair.
